Le département du Vaucluse (84) occupe une position singulière dans l’histoire des fortifications françaises : contrairement à ses voisins alpins, il ne conserve aucun ouvrage relevant du système Séré de Rivières. Le territoire, plus tourné vers les plaines du Comtat et les routes du Rhône que vers les zones frontalières, n’a pas fait l’objet des grands programmes de fortification entrepris après 1874. Son patrimoine militaire se concentre donc sur des ensembles bien antérieurs, notamment l’imposante enceinte d’Avignon et le puissant fort Saint-André, situé sur la rive opposée, à Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Deux témoignages majeurs d’un passé stratégique médiéval et moderne.

Das Gebiet, stärker auf die Ebenen des Comtat und die Rhône-Route ausgerichtet als auf Grenzräume, wurde nach 1874 nicht in die großen Befestigungsprogramme einbezogen. Sein militärisches Erbe beruht daher auf deutlich älteren Anlagen, insbesondere der mächtigen Stadtmauer von Avignon und dem Fort Saint-André auf dem gegenüberliegenden Ufer in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Zwei bedeutende Zeugnisse mittelalterlicher und frühneuzeitlicher Strategie.

Het gebied, meer gericht op de vlaktes van de Comtat en de Rhône-route dan op grensregio’s, werd na 1874 niet in de grote versterkingsprogramma’s opgenomen. Het militaire erfgoed bestaat daarom vooral uit oudere structuren, met als belangrijkste de omwalling van Avignon en het imposante fort Saint-André op de overliggende oever in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Twee markante getuigen van middeleeuwse en vroegmoderne defensie.

The Vaucluse department (84) occupies a distinct place in the history of French fortifications: unlike its Alpine neighbours, it contains no works from the Séré de Rivières system. Focused more on the plains of the Comtat and the Rhône corridor than on border zones, the region was not included in the major post-1874 fortification programmes. Its military heritage is therefore rooted in earlier periods, notably the formidable city walls of Avignon and the strong Fort Saint-André across the river in Villeneuve-lès-Avignon—two major witnesses to medieval and early modern defensive strategy.

Departement Vaucluse (84) zaujímá zvláštní místo v dějinách francouzského opevňování: na rozdíl od alpských sousedů zde nenajdeme žádná díla systému Séré de Rivières. Území, orientované spíše na roviny Comtatu a na komunikační osu podél Rhôny než na hraniční oblasti, nebylo po roce 1874 zahrnuto do velkých fortifikačních programů. Jeho vojenské dědictví tak pochází z dřívějších období, zejména z mohutného avignonského opevnění a z pevnosti Saint-André na protějším břehu ve Villeneuve-lès-Avignon. Dvě významná svědectví středověké a raně novověké obrany.
