Place de Cherbourg, côte est du Cotentin. Il nous a été très difficile de déterminer si La Hougue constituait une place ou bien si elle dépendait de Cherbourg. Indéniablement, elle a toujours dépendu de la direction du génie de Cherbourg et, lors de la construction de la caserne 7 à Tatihou en 1818, les plans indiquent "place de La Hougue et dépendances". En revanche, le "Petit atlas des bâtiments militaires et de la fortification" (postérieur à 1890) indique "Place de Cherbourg, annexe de La Hougue". À ce jour, nous n'avons pu déterminer quand La Hougue a perdu son statut de place à part entière, mais ce doit être entre 1870 et 1890. Ses principaux éléments étaient le fort de La Hougue (voir Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue), la batterie de Grenneville, les îles de Tatihou et de l'Ilet.
